SCENE 1 ---- BG 1 

(Drummond Mine, May 13th 1873) 

(Albert looks up and down the wall; William carries a TNT in 1 hand) 

Albert: Alright, the site’s clear. We can light ‘em up now. *stands up* 

William: Quick question, what’s that puddle over there? *points downward* 

Albert: Oh that? Just water, we can ignore it. 

(William nods and walks forward; crouches and places TNT in front of wall) 

William: Stand back and shield your eyes. *lights fuse and walks backwards* 

(miners wait a bit before the TNT explodes) 

SCENE 2 (fire keeps spreading throughout the scene) ---- BG 1 

(both cough and swat away the fumes; the smoke grows darker) 

(William opens his eyes and stiffens up) 

William: Albert, there’s a fire! 

Albert: God you’re right!  

Albert: Err...  *closes his eyes* Well, it ain’t gonna get far, so let’s just wait it out yeah? 

William: Spoke too soon, it’s spreading...  

Albert: Damn it! At this rate *cough* we’ll get engulfed in smoke. 

William: Hurry up! Let’s get out of here before the whole thing explodes! *grabs Albert’s arm* 

(both run out of the frame) 

SCENE 3 ---- BG 2,3,3.5 

(in another mining chamber, 2 other miners are working) 

Joseph: Phew... Another cart filled with coal. *brushes sweat away from his face* 

Edward: There’s still a while until your next break, don’t start slacking now!  

Joseph: Sorry sir! *quickly picks up his axe* 

(Thomas walks into frame) 

Thomas: Have you guys seen Albert? I need him for something.  

Edward: Albert? He went down with William a while ago, haven’t seen --- *gets cut off* 

Albert(offscreen): RUN! FIRE!  

(Albert and William rush in, when they stop, they are coughing uncontrollably) 

Joseph: Al! Will! The hell happened down there!?  

William: *coughing while crouching* There’s a fire, and it’s spreading so quickly! Sir, we’ve got to get people out of here NOW.  

Edward: Fire? How could there be a fire here? Your task was just to blow up some walls! 

Thomas: Who cares about the details?! I can already smell the smoke, so we’d better get going before we turn to dust. *runs out of frame* 

Joseph: Wait for us! *chases after Thomas* 

(Edward, William and Albert all run out after each other) 

(BG changes to the tunnel; shouting and screaming noises) 

(William’s leg goes out of shot) 

Albert: *cough* William! Wait for *cough* me!  

(Albert collapses to the ground as the smoke engulfs him) 

(BG changes to the entrance of the tunnel; Albert’s hand reaches out) 

Albert: No! Come back for--- *gets cut off* 

(Screen turns black) 

SCENE 4 ---- BG 4 

(Bird’s eye view of mine for a few seconds) 

*BOOM* 

(Camera pans to Edward and William next to a cabin meters away from the mine) 

Edward: William, where did you light the TNT? 

William: Next to some sort of puddle, sir. 

Edward: William, that was gasoline that was spilled. 

William: How was I supposed to know, sir? It looked like water! 

Edward: Water? Real water isn’t pure blue, it’s more transparent. 

William: Albert told me it was water! 

Edward: Speaking of Albert, where is he? 

William: I don’t know... I didn’t hear or see him when we were running away. 

Edward: I’ll look for him. Stay here until I return. 

(Edward walks back to the mine to find Albert) 

(10 minutes later) 

(Edward clears the debris in the tunnel) 

Edward: Albert? Albert, where are you!? 

(Edward sees Albert’s body and sighs, he reaches down to carry it) 

(Another 10 minutes later) 

Edward: Albert is dead, William. I have his body right here. 

William: He hasn’t sustained any major injuries; he’s probably just unconscious! C’mon you’ve gotta help him! 

Edward: I don’t know about that kid. 

(Edward performs CPR on Albert) 

(Albert doesn’t wake up) 

Edward: He’s gone William, I’m sorry. *looks at the ground solemnly* 

William: What? No! He can’t be dead! *collapses to the ground and starts crying* 

(Thomas walks into frame and spots Albert) 

Thomas: Darn... Albert too? *looks up at Edward* Sir, tons of people are missing, at least 30.  

Edward: Seriously?! Thomas, look after William. I’ll go assess the damage myself.  

Thomas: Roger that.

SCENE 5 --- BG 5,6 

(David runs in) 

David: What on earth happened here?  

Joseph: David! You’re alright!  

David: Thankfully. Me and a few others were resting in the cabins, is everything alright? 

Joseph: Hardly. At least 30 are missing and 20 are dead.  

David: Oh... Well, I’ve called for help. They should be arriving soon. 

Joseph: Hopefully they can rescue most of the inju- 

*BOOM* 

(BG changes to BG 6) 

(Nellie is shocked and runs down the hill) 

SCENE 6 --- BG 4,5,6 

(Nellie finds Edward unconscious) 

Nellie: *shakes Edward* Are you alive? 

Edward: *wakes up* Huh? What’s going on? 

Nellie: Another explosion occurred. If you’re fit enough, please help me find more miners! We have to rescue as many as we can before reinforcements arrive. 

Edward: On it. *gets up* 

(Edward and Nellie run to find the others, BG changes to BG 4) 

Edward: William! You alright? 

William: Yeah. 

Edward: Where's Thomas? 

William: He’s underneath the rubble; I don’t think he’s seriously injured. 

Nellie: Okay, I think I can save him. 

Edward: No time to waste! We've gotta go 

(Edward pushes the rocks away) 

Edward: Thomas! 

Thomas: I’m alright! *sees the damage* Oh brother! What happened here? 

Edward: I don’t exactly know what happened. My best bet is that the flames spread elsewhere and caused another explosion. 

Thomas: Argh... How could this have happened?  

(William covers his face with his hands) 

William: I’m sorry... *sniffles* Everyone’s dead because of me...  

Edward: No time to beat yourself up over it boy.  

Nellie: He’s right dear. Our priority is to find the rest. You should go up the hill, wait for help and try to spot more people. 

(William nods and walks away slowly) 

Thomas: Jeez, this is the worst day of my life. *looks up at the grey sky* 

(Scene ends with a bird’s-eye view of the mine, now destroyed and engulfed in flames)
